Support & Guidance

We take our responsibility to help you develop the awareness, experience and skills needed to thrive through your Sixth Form Career and beyond, very seriously. We also provide additional sessions and one-to-one support on request.

Your tutor will be the first point of reference for any information and advice you need, and will also be responsible for discussing your progress with you. They will also teach you for much of the formal pastoral programme.

Our Co-Director of Sixth Form, Pippa Ramsay, also fulfils a mentoring role for our Sixth Form students. Her position of Sixth Form Mentor allows her to offer guidance and advice to Sixth Formers who are struggling to balance their A levels, or need advice about the next steps.

Our Careers Programme includes essential study skills and input from outside agencies including employers, universities and gap year organisations. This is led by our Sixth Form Careers Co-ordinator, who is also available for personal advice and guidance no matter what your chosen future pathway. In Year 12, all students work through Activities Week together, receiving advice on Higher Education, Apprenticeships, Internships and employment.

We have also created a new Careers Guidance Hub in partnership with the LSP, this can be accessed via our Careers page or on this link: https://lspcareers.org.uk/gordano-school/

For those choosing to progress to university, specific training is given to support applications, including the offer of mock interviews. There is a formal preparation programme for students applying to ‘Oxbridge’, including a trip to Oxford or Cambridge each Easter, and a series of specific preparation sessions. This has resulted in a steady stream of Gordano students winning places at Oxford or Cambridge in recent years. Individual help is also offered to students who will be required to sit an entrance test.

We also encourage you to arrange work shadowing to enable you to gain an insight into your prospective occupation and demonstrate your interest to potential employers or admissions tutors. Whatever support you need, you have a fantastic network of people and resources who will give you the very best and most up to date advice and guidance possible.
