During the summer of 2024, England Men’s Football team had great success reaching the UEFA European Championship final where they narrowly lost to Spain, with the final score being 2-1. However, for many, this is much more than just a sporting success; it was a period where the nation became united over the same goal, where normally there is great divide by social and cultural differences within society. With football being deeply embedded in the culture of England, it allowed for a sense of community to be established.

The run of success brought people from all different backgrounds to unite in hope of the same outcome, creating a sense of shared pride and belonging for many. The success of the England team (men’s and women’s), assembled with players of various ethnicities and backgrounds, symbolised the diversity and unity of modern-day England. The diversity on the pitch mirrored the wider ideal sense of diversity and unity within the community that needs to be achieved, establishing the pride throughout the nation.

Social media, despite its controversy at times, also played a crucial role, creating a digital community for many to share their joy and participate in collective celebrations. This widespread online community, alongside the grassroots celebrations, helped strengthen local community ties, reinforcing a sense of togetherness and shared purpose.

The following questions were discussed in tutor groups:

1) What role does football play in building our school community?

2) What barriers are there that prevent some people from feeling like they can get involved in football in our community, and how can they be removed?
