Musicians Wow Community at Open Mic Evening

The first ever Open Mic Gordano (OMG!) event has taken place at Clarence House in Portishead, showcasing the incredible talents of Gordano School students.

The venue, set in the heart of the community was packed with students, parents and local residents who gathered to enjoy a night of musical performances. The event was designed to be a community gathering and it was wonderful to see so many residents from Portishead and beyond in attendance.

OMG! was not just a showcase of talent but also a celebration of community and the supportive environment that the school fosters.

I am so proud of all the students who performed this evening. We are a one-school community and we are delighted that we’ve brought this event beyond the school gates for all to enjoy. I hope this is one of many public gigs to come.

Dr. Humphries, Head of Music

Throughout the evening, students from the various year groups took to the stage, each bringing their unique flair. It was a joy to see so many of them step up to perform and to see their confidence grow as they received huge cheers and applause from the audience and fellow performers. The support and encouragement the students showed each other was truly heartening and embodies the school’s vision for students to show kindness and be positive role models.

Attendees have kindly taken the time to contact the school afterwards, saying: ‘I just wanted to say how amazing the OMG event was last night. It was fabulous seeing all of the brave, talented young people performing, but also the support that the music team provide to all of them. The way the staff are ambassadors for music and their pupils is wonderful and I really hope there will be more awe-inspiring events like this.  It was an utter treat!’

What a treat it was to go out on a Monday night and experience some wonderful music! This is a fantastic idea and shows what excellent teaching and encouragement is given from the music department that allows children the experience of performance in this environment. The culture of giving it a go and the support from staff and pupils is brilliant. Thank you. We loved the range of different acts too. Please do this again!

Sam Dorney, the Teacher of Music who organised the event, said “I have the best job in the world. I love teaching these kids.”

The school hopes to run more events like this in the future and invites members of the community to follow facebook.com/gordanoschool for updates.
