Gordano School Brilliant Club Students Celebrate Outstanding Success by ‘Graduating’ at the University of Bristol

A group of 13 exceptional students from Gordano School have marked a significant achievement by celebrating their completion of the Brilliant Club programme at a special Graduation Ceremony held at the University of Bristol.

The Programme ran as part of Gordano's 'Aspire Programme' and over the past few months, these dedicated students have been tutored by a university lecturer, delving into advanced academic topics including Biochemistry and producing a final 1500 word university-style assignment. The ceremony was not just an occasion to celebrate their academic success, but also an opportunity to tour the prestigious university, gain insight into university life, and reflect on their experiences.

The event was attended by Gordano School students, along with students from schools in Cornwall and Plymouth, who came together to celebrate their achievements. During the ceremony, students had the chance to engage in discussions about their journey throughout the programme, highlighting the impact it had on their academic and personal growth.

“The Brilliant Club has helped me to achieve more than I thought I could do. I loved receiving a tour of the campus and attending my graduation ceremony.”, said one student. Another added, “It has developed my mind for university levels. I learned how to reference and structure in an essay.”

Gordano School’s participation in The Brilliant Club is a reflection of the school’s commitment to fostering ambition and engagement. As Lucy Pope, Leader of Gordano Aspire Programme noted, “The Brilliant Club embodies our school value to dream big and I’m so proud of all our students who took part.” Mandi Davies, Inclusive Learning Co-ordinator added, “This charity has helped our students unlock their potential and gain the confidence they need to aim for a place at competitive universities, including those in the prestigious Russell Group.”

The Brilliant Club, a UK-wide university access charity, has been running The Scholars Programme since 2011, aiming to increase the number of students from less advantaged backgrounds attending top universities. Through this programme, students have the opportunity to learn outside of the regular curriculum and engage in university-style learning, preparing them for the rigours of higher education.

The success of Gordano School’s students is a testament to the programme's impact. By providing opportunities for academic growth and exposure to university life, The Brilliant Club is helping to break down barriers and create a more inclusive higher education system.
