Life as a Student Leader

Written by Biba Hughes for The Griffin Magazine, Gordano’s student-run magazine

'Overall, as a school we have such an intense sense of community which is displayed in several ways. One of the most important ways is the Student Leadership Team due to its positive attributes for the wider school community that are always at the forefront of our decision-making.

I encourage anyone to be involved in any sort of leadership around the school site to ensure that Gordano is the best it possibly can be. A community group is the Sixth Form Student Leaders. We work as a team to organise celebrations throughout the Sixth Form for both Year 13 and Year 12, as well as, like the House Captains, presenting at school events.

The Student Leaders meet fortnightly to discuss the upcoming events in the school and make sure each leader has a project and/or has made progress on this said project. This could be a range of things, such as Silly Sports Day face-painting to creating PowerPoints for celebrations such as World Music Day.

Recently the Senior Students attended a Lighthouse Schools Partnership meeting at Backwell School with the other Student Leaders in the LSP. We conferred about the way the student leadership team worked at each of our own schools and shared insightful tips and ideas as to how to improve the way we run our teams.

We all agreed as a group that we need to connect more with the other schools and run interschool events such as the University Challenge which ran at Backwell last year. This is to unite our wider community with the other schools and ensure we have the strongest leadership teams possible.'
